SAINT FRANCISCO JAVIER

The outstanding image of Saint Francis Xavier is the work of Pedro Roldán (1624-1699), the leading Sevillian sculptor of the last third of the 17th century. The magnificent image was imported from Seville around 1672 by Don Juan de Arce y Rojas for the chapel which he founded next to his house in Calle Real del Puerto, today Calle O’Daly at number 44. In doing so, he showed his devotion to the missionary saint of the Society of Jesus, in which two of his sons, fathers Juan and José de Arce y Rojas, called the ‘Apostle of Paraguay’, professed their vows.
